BLUE FALCON - MARK ROBB
Gyr falcons
RETURN TO HOME PAGE

Largest of all the falcon species, the gyr falcon (Falco rusticolus) inhabits the cold and isolated arctic and sub-arctic regions. With long broad wings, a long square tail, long stout toes, and massive pectoral muscles the gyr falcon is an immensely strong and powerful hunting bird. The plumage colour of this falcon is extremely variable ranging from nearly pure white to jet black. Previously divided into five or six subspecies it is now considered more appropriate to classify the sub specific variation observed in gyr falcons as colour phases rather than distinct geographical races.

Weight: males = 850-1300g and females = 1400-2000g.
NB. These are approximate weight ranges from hunting to fat weight.
